Rider Profile – Gabriel Morris

In this short series, you will meet our brand ambassadors. They represent our values and achievements and are more than just faces – they're partners in our journey. Let's welcome them as a source of inspiration and excellence.

Coming from an equestrian family, Gabriel Morris started riding at the age of five. His interest was sparked while watching the 2012 London Olympics when he saw the remarkable harmony between horse and rider, and the magnificence of the horses we all cherish. The very next day, he excitedly sat on a little grey pony and was entered into a lead rein showing class – just as many showing moms do!

Having dabbled in several disciplines such as showing, dressage, equitation, and show jumping, Gabriel now focuses on show jumping and equitation. "Show jumping presents challenges that teach resilience and quick decision making, while equitation pushes me to strive for perfection. Through these challenging moments, I am starting to discover my potential."

Gabriel has been fortunate to ride a few different horses in the Pony Rider and Junior classes. Currently, he competes with Highover Carrick Tor and Jerry Maguire, his trusted companions, who have been teaching him invaluable lessons in both sport and life. A special mention goes to his beloved pony, Monarch, whose unpredictable nature and determination taught him about resilience and spirit. He credits his horses for shaping him into a better rider.

A Quick Q&A

How do you balance horses and school?

"An effective routine has been key to finding balance between riding and high school. I keep my two horses in a good system and squeeze in extra school work on weekends."

We all know horses come with their fair share of setbacks. How do you overcome them?

"For me, setbacks serve as a reminder to appreciate the good days and to return to the basics with a growth-oriented mindset."

What are your goals and aspirations for the future?

"As a rider, I aim to constantly push myself to be better and expand my horizons. I'd love to represent Gauteng in show jumping and equitation. Becoming the equestrian captain at my school is something I'm working towards, and by the end of the year, I'd like to be competitive in the 1.20m classes. The prestigious Phillip Smith competition is definitely on my equestrian bucket list, and I hope to win it one day!"

Are there any particular equestrian role models or riders you look up to? What do you admire about them?

"My coach, Kayla Gertenbach, along with riders like Carl Boonzaaier, Jack Whitaker, and Ben Maher. They all possess qualities that I admire in a rider – patience, unwavering determination, exceptional skill, and sportsmanship. They serve as great examples of what can be achieved through dedication and a pure passion for the sport."

How do you structure your routine with the well-being and condition of the horses in mind?

"To ensure my horses are in good physical and mental condition, I incorporate consistent flatwork, pole work, jumping, hacking, and rest days into their weekly routine."

What advice would you give aspiring horse riders who are just starting their journey?

"Patience is key. Embrace challenges, as they offer valuable opportunities for growth and improvement."

What are your thoughts on the relationship between a rider and their horse?

"Horses teach you numerous lessons, both in and out of the arena. The bond between horse and rider is a special force that teaches synergy, confidence, and camaraderie."

What are some future aspirations you have in the sport and the equestrian industry as a whole?

"I hope to become a force to be reckoned with in the highest levels of my chosen disciplines one day. As much as I want to achieve these big goals, the harmony and passion between me and my horses are most important and embody the essence of the sport we all love."
