The warm-up arena
The warm-up arena is where riders prepare their horses before entering the show ring. This time in the warm up should not only “warm up” the rider and horse, but it should also help establish a good frame of mind for both horse and rider to be able to perform at their best in the ring.
However – this is not always the case! I think most can agree that the warm up can often be a chaotic and stressful time.
Equestrian sports are not only about the horse and rider’s physical and mental abilities but also about the sportsmanship and etiquette exhibited in the warm-up arena.
Here are some tips for warm-up arena etiquette, and hopefully we can help make the warm up arena a better and safer experience for all!
1. Respect Personal Space
When riding in a warm-up arena, riders must respect each other’s personal space. Avoid crowding or getting too close to another horse and rider combination. Always be aware of your surroundings and keep a safe distance from other horses to avoid accidents. If you need to pass another rider, do so at a safe distance and at a slower pace.
If you encounter a stallion or an anxious horse, be courteous and give them a little extra room.
2. Call Your Movements
It is essential to let other riders in the warm-up arena know what you plan to do. You should call your movements, especially if you are going to approach a jump and be mindful of other riders approaching the jumps as well.
3. Passing left to left
Oncoming riders should always pass “left to left”. The rider on the inside track must allow enough space for the passing rider without them being pinned to the fence. Riders who are walking should stick to the outside track.
4. Yield to Higher-Priority Riders
Riders should always yield to higher-priority riders, such as those who are before you in the running order or those who are on an anxious horse and need some space. The same goes for other riders who may be jumping the same jump as you and have called before you or are already on their way to the jump. This will help to maintain a safe and orderly environment in the warm-up arena.
5. Stay Focused
When in the warm-up arena, it is crucial to stay focused on your horse and your movements. Avoid talking to other riders or being distracted by your surroundings. Similarly if you need to stop to discuss something with a fellow rider or coach, avoid stopping in the way of oncoming or passing horse traffic and rather in the corner. This will help to ensure your safety and that of others in the arena.
6. Respect the Horse
Remember that the welfare of the horse is of utmost importance in equestrian sports. Always treat your horse with kindness and respect.
7. Be courteous
Always be courteous and polite to fellow riders and those on the ground adjusting jumps. We are all there for the same reason, let’s promote good sportsmanship and a positive experience for all horses, riders, trainers and assistants.
In conclusion, following proper warm-up arena etiquette is crucial to ensure the safety and comfort of all participants and promotes a positive and respectful environment.
